St Isaac’s cathedral is one of the most impressive cathedrals in St Petersburg. It’s the fourth largest dome cathedral in the world and the biggest in our city, and it can easily hold 10000 people. The building was designed by Auguste Montferrand and was constructed between 1818-1858. The interiors of St Isaac’s cathedral are luxuriously decorated with mosaics, paintings, sculptures and columns faced with semiprecious stones. During WWII paintings, furniture and other valuables from many museums of St Petersburg and its suburbs were kept in the basement of the building as its walls are up to 5 meters wide. Today St Isaac’s cathedral is a museum and only a small part of it is used for religious services.

It’s also possible to climb up about 300 steps to the colonnade of the cathedral, but there is no elevator so it’s not an easy walk. You need to buy separate tickets for the interiors of St Isaac’s cathedral and the colonnade.

St Isaac’s cathedral is open daily, except Wednesday from 10:00 to 18:00
